Why a table changes the outcome

The short answer

Three reasons. The dog is at a height where you can see what the blade is doing. The surface is non-slip, so the dog is not constantly rebalancing. And with an arm you have both hands free. Most bad home grooms are a visibility and positioning problem, not a tool problem.

This page is for you if

You are grooming at home and finding it awkward, slow or physically uncomfortable, or your dog will not stand still.

You are on the wrong page if

You only ever do nails and paw pads on a small dog. Your lap works fine; spend the money on a better grinder.

Non-slip top, working height, arm clamped to the edge. That setup is worth more than a clipper upgrade.

Never leave a dog on a table unattended, not for a second, and never with the loop attached. Dogs jump off tables, and a dog that jumps while attached to an arm is a serious injury. The loop is there to discourage wandering while you are standing right there.

If you cannot buy a table

A non-slip bath mat on a sturdy kitchen table or a washing machine gets you most of the benefit for nothing. The two things to keep are the non-slip surface and the height. Do not use anything that moves, rocks, or is narrower than the dog. Technique either way: how to use a grooming table.

What goes with it

An arm and a loop first. Then somewhere for the hair to go — see grooming vacuums. Then, for a large dog, a plan for getting it up there that is not lifting: tables for large dogs.

Specs: Dogster — Best Dog Grooming Tables

The arm being in the box is the practical reason this is the default pick: almost everyone buys a table, then immediately discovers they need an arm, and buying them together is cheaper and guarantees they fit. It folds flat, which matters in a house rather than a salon, and the size range means you can match the tabletop to the dog instead of hoping.

Stability8.0
Storage9.0
Arm included10.0
Size range9.5
Value8.5
Overall8.9 / 10

What it gets right

  • Arm included, which is the part people forget to budget for and then need immediately
  • Folds, so it does not permanently occupy a room in a house
  • Multiple sizes means you can match the table to the dog rather than the other way round

What it gets wrong

  • Folding legs are the weak point on any folding table over years of use
  • You still have to lift the dog onto it
  • Rubber top holds hair and needs real cleaning

Who should skip itSkip it if your dog is over about 70 lb and you cannot lift — you want a low-entry or electric table.

02

Best build quality

Flying Pig foldable grooming table

Built to a professional duty cycle; still square in five years when a lighter table is not.

A dog standing on a grooming table

Heavy-duty foldable grooming table

Build
Heavy-duty frame built for daily professional use
Configurations
Foldable and electric models available
Capacity
Rated for large and giant breeds

Specs: PetGroomerHub — Best Grooming Tables Compared 2026

Table flex is a safety issue rather than a comfort one: a dog that feels the surface move under it stops trusting the surface, and a dog that does not trust the surface moves. A heavy-duty frame removes that, and this one is built for years of daily professional use. The costs are weight, storage space and a price above what a one-dog household strictly needs.

Stability9.5
Storage6.0
Arm included7.0
Size range9.0
Value7.5
Overall8.3 / 10

What it gets right

  • Built to a professional duty cycle — this is the table that is still square in five years
  • Handles giant breeds without flexing, which is a safety issue, not a comfort one
  • Same brand ecosystem as the arms and accessories, so everything fits

What it gets wrong

  • Heavy. Folding it is a two-hand job and moving it is a chore
  • Costs more than a home groomer strictly needs
  • Takes real storage space even folded

Who should skip itSkip it if you groom one small dog monthly — a lighter table is easier to live with.

Best budget table

Go Pet Club grooming table

Height-adjustable and genuinely a table, which most budget options are not.

A dog standing on a grooming table

Budget adjustable grooming table

Height
Adjustable
Positioning
Best-value grooming table
Top
Non-slip surface

Specs: Dogster — Best Dog Grooming Tables

The published value pick, and adjustable height is the feature that justifies it — most tables at this price are fixed, and a fixed table at the wrong height is worse than no table. Frame flex under a large determined dog is the honest limit, and the arm is usually a separate purchase. For a small or medium dog groomed monthly, it is enough.

Stability6.5
Storage8.5
Arm included4.0
Size range7.0
Value9.5
Overall7.4 / 10

What it gets right

  • The cheapest table that is still a table rather than a folding card table with a mat on it
  • Adjustable height, which most budget tables skip
  • Enough for a small or medium dog groomed monthly

What it gets wrong

  • Frame flexes under a big dog that decides to move
  • Arm often sold separately
  • Finish and hardware quality reflect the price

Who should skip itSkip it for a large or anxious dog — flex in a table makes a dog less willing to stand still, not more.

04

Best for large, senior or arthritic dogs

Flying Pig electric lift grooming table

Low entry height means the dog walks on. That removes the main injury risk in home grooming.

A dog standing on a grooming table

Electric lift grooming table

Lift
Electric
Tabletop
42–50 in options
Capacity
220–400 lb depending on model
Entry
Low-entry height for dogs that cannot be lifted

Specs: PetGroomerHub — Best Grooming Tables Compared 2026

Lifting a large dog onto a table is how owners hurt their backs and how dogs get dropped. An electric lift with a low entry height — 42 to 50 inch tabletops, rated roughly 220 to 400 lb depending on model — lets the dog step on and then raises it to working height. For a senior dog, a giant breed, or anyone with a bad back, this is not a luxury.

Stability9.5
Storage3.0
Arm included8.0
Size range9.5
Value5.5
Overall7.7 / 10

What it gets right

  • The low entry height is the real feature: a senior or arthritic dog walks on instead of being lifted
  • Removes the single biggest injury risk in home grooming, which is you lifting the dog
  • Height adjustment mid-groom saves your back on a long session

What it gets wrong

  • The most expensive item in this whole category by a wide margin
  • Needs a power outlet and a permanent floor footprint
  • A motor is one more thing that can fail

Who should skip itSkip it if you own a 15 lb dog you can lift one-handed — you are buying a solution to a problem you do not have.

Best single accessory, whatever table you buy

Master Equipment grooming arm with loop

An arm turns two hands of dog-holding into two hands of grooming. Buy one with the table.

A dog standing on a grooming table

Grooming arm and restraint

Fitting

Adjustment
Height-adjustable post

Grooming loop

The highest value-per-dollar item in this whole category. Without an arm you are holding the dog with one hand and working with the other, which is why home grooms take twice as long and look worse. A height-adjustable post with a loop puts the dog where it should be, hands-free. It clamps to most table edges, so it is not tied to a matching table.

Stability8.5
Storage9.5
Arm included10.0
Size range9.0
Value10.0
Overall9.2 / 10

What it gets right

  • An arm turns two hands of dog-holding into two hands of grooming — it is the highest-value accessory here
  • Height-adjustable, so the loop sits where it should on any size dog
  • Clamps to most table edges rather than needing a matching table

What it gets wrong

  • A loop is a positioning aid, not a restraint, and a dog must never be left in one
  • Clamp can mark a table edge
  • Cheap arms wobble; this is why you buy a branded one

Who should skip itSkip it only if your dog already stands still unaided — almost nobody's does.

FAQ

Questions people actually ask

How much is a dog grooming table?

They span a very wide range, from basic folding tables to electric lift units that cost several times as much. We do not publish price figures we cannot verify from a live feed — every buy button on this page goes to the current price.

Do I need a grooming arm?

If you want both hands free, yes, and that is the whole point of a table. An arm is the cheapest meaningful upgrade in home grooming.

What height should a grooming table be?

High enough that your forearms are roughly level when you work on the dog's back — for most people that is around 32 to 36 inches for a medium dog, lower for a tall dog. If you are bending, it is too low.

Can I use a regular table?

Yes, with a non-slip mat, as long as it does not rock and it is wider than the dog. The thing you will miss is the arm, and clamp-on arms will fit many ordinary table edges.

Is a folding table stable enough for a big dog?

A heavy-duty one is; a budget one is not. Flex is the thing to test — push down hard on one corner, and if it moves noticeably, your dog will feel it and will not settle.

How this page was put together

We define the coat problem the tool has to solve, shortlist products currently sold, compare the manufacturers’ documented specifications against what that coat actually needs, and cross-check against published findings from named sources. We do not test these tools on our own dogs under controlled conditions, and we will not say we do. Where a figure comes from a manufacturer, we name them; where it comes from someone else’s testing, we cite them. We print no prices — a stale number is worse than none. Read the full method.
