What an arm is for

The short answer

An arm holds a loop at the right height so the dog has a clear sense of where to stand, which frees both of your hands for the tool and the coat. It is not a restraint and it does not hold a dog that genuinely wants to leave — it removes the need to keep repositioning a dog that is simply drifting.

Dogs jump off tables. A dog that jumps while attached to an arm can be seriously injured. The loop is for use while you are standing beside the dog with a hand free, and it comes off the moment you step away — to answer a door, to fetch a tool, to anything.

Also: a loop goes around the neck loosely, not tightly, and never around a dog that pulls back hard against it. If your dog fights the loop, work without one.

Fitting and height

SettingRule
Loop heightAt the dog's natural head height when standing — not lifting the head
Loop tensionLoose enough to fit two fingers underneath
Arm positionClamped to the end of the table, not the side
Clamp tightnessFirm enough that pushing the post does not move it
Second loop (belly band)Optional, for a dog that sits down constantly
A grooming arm clamped to a table with a loop at the dog's head height
Loop at natural head height, two fingers of slack, arm clamped at the end of the table. Your hands are now free.

Belly bands and haunch holders

Secondary straps that support the body are sold for dogs that persistently sit down or lean. They can genuinely help an elderly or wobbly dog stand comfortably, and they carry the same hard rule as a loop: never unattended. For a dog that sits down because standing hurts, the answer is a vet conversation, not a strap.

If your dog fights the arm

Some dogs find a loop around the neck genuinely aversive. Work without one: a non-slip surface and a hand on the dog is a perfectly good setup, and a second person for the first few grooms is better than a strap on an unhappy dog. Technique and positioning: how to use a grooming table.

Best grooming arm

Master Equipment grooming arm with loop

Height-adjustable, clamps to most table edges, loop included. Nothing else needed.

What you want from an arm is that it does not wobble and that the loop sits at the right height for your dog, and a solid clamp plus an adjustable post delivers both. Because it clamps rather than bolting to a specific table, it works on whatever surface you are using now and whatever you upgrade to later. Cheap arms flex, which defeats the purpose entirely.

Overall9.4 / 10

What it gets right

  • An arm turns two hands of dog-holding into two hands of grooming — it is the highest-value accessory here
  • Height-adjustable, so the loop sits where it should on any size dog
  • Clamps to most table edges rather than needing a matching table

What it gets wrong

  • A loop is a positioning aid, not a restraint, and a dog must never be left in one
  • Clamp can mark a table edge
  • Cheap arms wobble; this is why you buy a branded one

Who should skip itSkip it only if your dog already stands still unaided — almost nobody's does.

02

Best table-and-arm bundle

Master Equipment grooming table with arm

The arm is in the box and it fits, which removes the commonest home-grooming shopping error.

A dog standing on a grooming table

Foldable grooming table

Sizes
Several tabletop sizes
Folding
Folds flat for storage
Included
Grooming arm
Surface
Ribbed non-slip rubber

Specs: Dogster — Best Dog Grooming Tables

Buying the arm with the table is cheaper than buying both separately and removes any question of fitment. It folds flat for storage and comes in several tabletop sizes, so you can match it to the dog. Folding legs are the long-term weak point on any folding table, and you still have to get the dog on it yourself.

Rigidity8.0
Height adjustment8.0
Fits other tables6.0
Loop included10.0
Value9.0
Overall8.4 / 10

What it gets right

  • Arm included, which is the part people forget to budget for and then need immediately
  • Folds, so it does not permanently occupy a room in a house
  • Multiple sizes means you can match the table to the dog rather than the other way round

What it gets wrong

  • Folding legs are the weak point on any folding table over years of use
  • You still have to lift the dog onto it
  • Rubber top holds hair and needs real cleaning

Who should skip itSkip it if your dog is over about 70 lb and you cannot lift — you want a low-entry or electric table.

03

Best for a dog that cannot be positioned by hand

Flying Pig electric lift grooming table

When the problem is a heavy or arthritic dog rather than a wriggly one, an arm is not the answer.

A dog standing on a grooming table

Electric lift grooming table

Lift
Electric
Tabletop
42–50 in options
Capacity
220–400 lb depending on model
Entry
Low-entry height for dogs that cannot be lifted

Specs: PetGroomerHub — Best Grooming Tables Compared 2026

Diagnose the problem correctly. An arm solves 'the dog will not stand where I need it'. It does not solve 'I cannot get this dog off the floor' or 'standing is painful for this dog'. For those, a low-entry electric lift is the right spend, and it is a much larger one. Needs an outlet and permanent floor space.

Rigidity9.5
Height adjustment10.0
Fits other tables2.0
Loop included8.0
Value5.5
Overall7.0 / 10

What it gets right

  • The low entry height is the real feature: a senior or arthritic dog walks on instead of being lifted
  • Removes the single biggest injury risk in home grooming, which is you lifting the dog
  • Height adjustment mid-groom saves your back on a long session

What it gets wrong

  • The most expensive item in this whole category by a wide margin
  • Needs a power outlet and a permanent floor footprint
  • A motor is one more thing that can fail

Who should skip itSkip it if you own a 15 lb dog you can lift one-handed — you are buying a solution to a problem you do not have.

04

Best base for an arm on a big dog

Flying Pig foldable grooming table

An arm is only as rigid as what it is clamped to. On a large dog that means a solid table.

A dog standing on a grooming table

Heavy-duty foldable grooming table

Build
Heavy-duty frame built for daily professional use
Configurations
Foldable and electric models available
Capacity
Rated for large and giant breeds

Specs: PetGroomerHub — Best Grooming Tables Compared 2026

A good arm on a flexing table still wobbles, because the flex is in the table. For a large dog, a heavy-duty frame built for professional daily use gives the arm something to be rigid against, and the dog something to trust. Heavy, bulky, and more table than a small-dog household needs.

Rigidity9.5
Height adjustment8.0
Fits other tables5.0
Loop included7.0
Value7.5
Overall7.6 / 10

What it gets right

  • Built to a professional duty cycle — this is the table that is still square in five years
  • Handles giant breeds without flexing, which is a safety issue, not a comfort one
  • Same brand ecosystem as the arms and accessories, so everything fits

What it gets wrong

  • Heavy. Folding it is a two-hand job and moving it is a chore
  • Costs more than a home groomer strictly needs
  • Takes real storage space even folded

Who should skip itSkip it if you groom one small dog monthly — a lighter table is easier to live with.

FAQ

Questions people actually ask

Is a grooming loop safe?

Yes, used attended and loose. It is not safe unattended, and it is not safe tight. Those two rules cover essentially every grooming-loop accident.

Can I use a regular lead instead?

In a pinch, tied loosely to something solid at the right height — but a lead has no quick release and a loop does, which matters if a dog panics. A proper loop is inexpensive.

Will an arm fit my kitchen table?

Clamp-on arms fit many ordinary table edges, provided the edge is not too thick and the table is rigid. Check the clamp opening against your table thickness before buying.

Do I need an arm for nails only?

No. Nail work is done with the dog lying down or standing with one paw lifted, and a loop does not help. An arm earns its place during body work and drying.

How this page was put together

We define the coat problem the tool has to solve, shortlist products currently sold, compare the manufacturers’ documented specifications against what that coat actually needs, and cross-check against published findings from named sources. We do not test these tools on our own dogs under controlled conditions, and we will not say we do. Where a figure comes from a manufacturer, we name them; where it comes from someone else’s testing, we cite them. We print no prices — a stale number is worse than none. Read the full method.
