The Wahl Thick Coat Pro kit is a sensible first purchase for a home groomer. Corded, so no runtime limit on a slow first attempt, with the combs, scissors, comb and oil in the box. The fixed blade is the trade: your lengths are whatever the combs give.
Buy it if
This is your first clipper, you have a medium thick coat to maintain, and you would rather buy one box than six separate items.
Skip it if
You expect to groom more than one dog regularly, or your dog's coat is difficult. You will outgrow a fixed-blade home clipper inside a year.

Where a numeric figure is not published by the manufacturer or a named source, the row above is qualitative rather than estimated. We do not publish specifications we cannot cite.

What it gets right
The bundle is coherent
This is the distinction between a good kit and a padded one. Guide combs, a comb, scissors and blade oil are exactly the items a first-time groomer otherwise buys separately within a fortnight, usually after a disappointing first attempt. Having them in the box removes a real friction point.
Corded, which on a first groom matters more than people expect
Your first full groom will take two or three times as long as you planned. A corded clipper has no runtime limit, so the session ends when you decide rather than when a battery does.
Guide combs get you a usable length without blade knowledge
The most common first-groom disappointment is a dog that looks shaved, because the only blade was short. Combs give a graded set of longer lengths and make an even finish much easier to achieve on a fluffy coat.
What it gets wrong
The fixed blade is a ceiling
There is no detachable A5 mount, so you cannot buy your way into finer control later. When your needs grow — a specific length, a skip-tooth for bulk — the answer is a different clipper, not a different blade.
Home-grade motor
It will heat up on a big job and slow in genuinely dense coat. Working in passes and oiling frequently manages that, but it is not a professional motor and a felted coat will defeat it.
Combs demand a properly brushed coat
Guide combs ride over or snag on any coat that is not fully brushed out. That is true of all combs, and it means the brush matters as much as the kit — which the kit's own brush, if included, is usually not good enough to be.
You want to spend the same money on better individual items.
How we assessed it
This assessment rests on the manufacturer’s documented specifications and on published findings from the named sources at the foot of the page, compared against what the coat types in question actually require. We did not test this unit on our own dogs under controlled conditions, and we will not claim to have done. Where a figure comes from a manufacturer we say so; where it comes from someone else’s testing we cite them. The score is our editorial assessment, not a product rating derived from reviews or measurements. Full method on how we review.

What it gets right
+A complete first kit — you are not discovering you also need combs, oil and scissors after the fact
+Corded, so there is no runtime limit on a long first attempt
+Cheapest honest route to clipping a medium thick coat at home
What it gets wrong
−Fixed blade, so your cut lengths are whatever the included combs give you
−Not a detachable A5 system — you cannot buy your way into finer control later
−Motor is home-grade and will heat up on a big job
Who should skip itSkip it if you expect to groom more than one dog regularly — you will outgrow it within a year.
For a small, well-brushed doodle, yes, with the longest combs. For a standard doodle or one that mats, you want a detachable-blade clipper.
+−What is in the box?
Bundle contents vary by retailer, but the kit is sold around the clipper plus guide combs, a comb, scissors, blade oil and storage. Check the specific listing.
+−Can I buy longer blades for it?
No — it has a fixed blade. Guide combs are how you get longer lengths.
+−How long will it last?
Used on one dog every six weeks, several years. Used weekly on a dense coat, considerably less, and that is the point at which a detachable-blade clipper becomes the cheaper option.
How this page was put together
We define the coat problem the tool has to solve, shortlist products currently sold, compare the manufacturers’ documented specifications against what that coat actually needs, and cross-check against published findings from named sources. We do not test these tools on our own dogs under controlled conditions, and we will not say we do. Where a figure comes from a manufacturer, we name them; where it comes from someone else’s testing, we cite them. We print no prices — a stale number is worse than none. Read the full method.
