A large dog is not a small dog with more hair. It is a longer session, a heavier animal to position, more blade heat, and more opportunity for both of you to lose patience. The clipper choice follows from those facts rather than from a power figure.

What actually limits a large-dog groom

The short answer

Not clipper power — session length. A 45 to 90 minute groom means blade heat, battery fade and your own wrist become the constraints. Buy corded or a cordless unit with real runtime, keep two blades in rotation so one cools, and put the dog on a table at working height.

Two blades, not one

The single most useful habit for large-dog clipping is blade rotation. Buy two of the blade you use most and swap them every ten minutes. One cools while the other works, you never wait, and the dog never gets a hot blade. It is cheaper than a second clipper and it solves the actual problem. The blade roundup covers which to buy first.

A large dog standing on a grooming table at working height
A big dog at floor level means you work bent over with no sightline. This is the upgrade most large-dog owners should make before upgrading the clipper.

It is the most common way an owner gets injured during home grooming, and a dropped dog is a vet visit. Use a low-entry or electric table, or a ramp, or groom on the floor with the dog lying down. See tables for large dogs and how to use a grooming table.

If your large dog is double-coated, read this first

Most large dogs people want to clip — retrievers, shepherds, huskies, Pyrenees, Bernese — are double-coated, and clipping them is usually the wrong call. Go to grooming a double coat before you buy anything, and to clippers for double coats for the cases where it genuinely is necessary.

01

Best overall for a big coated dog

Andis UltraEdge AGC Super 2-Speed

Corded so it never slows, vent-free so it never clogs, and 14 feet of cord to work around.

A detachable-blade animal clipper resting on a work surface

Corded detachable-blade clipper

Speeds
3,400 / 4,400 SPM
Motor
Rotary, corded
Blade system
Detachable A5 (UltraEdge / CeramicEdge / ShowEdge)
Cord
14 ft heavy-duty
Weight
17.6 oz
Housing
Vent-free, no cooling fan to clog

Specs: Andis — UltraEdge AGC Super 2-Speed product listing

On a large dog the groom is 45 to 90 minutes, which rules out anything that fades. Corded means constant output from first pass to last. The vent-free housing matters more here than anywhere because a big dog sheds a big volume of fine hair into whatever is nearby. And the 14 ft cord is a genuinely practical spec: you can walk round a table without an extension lead.

Sustained output9.5
Heat over 45+ minutes9.0
Blade range10.0
Wrist comfort7.5
Value8.5
Overall9.0 / 10

What it gets right

  • Two usable speeds rather than one compromise speed — 3,400 SPM for bulk removal, 4,400 for finish work
  • Takes the whole A5 detachable blade range, so one clipper covers every coat length you will ever need
  • The vent-free housing is the reason it survives doodle coats: there is no fan intake for undercoat to pack into
  • 14 ft cord means you are not fighting an extension lead around a grooming table

What it gets wrong

  • Corded, so you work around a cable with a dog that may not stand still
  • Ships with one blade; a doodle or double coat needs at least two more, which is a real added cost
  • Heavier in the hand than a cordless unit over a long session

Who should skip itSkip it if you own one short-coated small dog — this is more clipper than that coat will ever need.

02

Best for a large dog with difficult coat

Wahl KM Inspire

The one to buy if your big dog is also a matting or dense-undercoat problem.

A detachable-blade animal clipper resting on a work surface

Corded brushless detachable-blade clipper

Speeds
Two-speed
Motor
Brushless, corded
Blade system
Detachable A5
Running temperature
Stays cool through dense coat work

Size plus difficult coat is the hardest combination in home grooming, and it is where brushless stops being a luxury. Holding speed under load across a 90 lb dog means fewer passes, which means less time and less heat against skin. If you own a Newfoundland, a Bernese or a heavily coated shepherd, this is the honest recommendation.

Sustained output10.0
Heat over 45+ minutes9.5
Blade range10.0
Wrist comfort7.0
Value7.0
Overall8.9 / 10

What it gets right

  • The brushless motor is the point: it pushes through matted coat and dense undercoat without bogging down
  • Runs cool on long sessions, which is what actually causes clipper burn on a big dog
  • Detachable A5 blades, so it shares the blade set with Andis and Oster clippers

What it gets wrong

  • Priced like a professional tool because it is one
  • Corded only
  • Overkill for a single small dog on a monthly tidy-up

Who should skip itSkip it unless you are regularly working through dense or matted coat — a lighter clipper is easier to handle for everything else.

03

Best for a large dog that will not work near a cord

Oster Pro 3000i

Cordless, A5 blades, and runtime built for a full groom rather than a tidy-up.

A detachable-blade animal clipper resting on a work surface

Cordless detachable-blade clipper

Speed
3,000 SPM
Power
Cordless, lithium-ion
Blade system
Detachable A5
Positioning
Professional-grade cordless for extended runtime

A cord round a big moving dog is a hazard to both of you. The Pro 3000i is one of very few cordless clippers with both a battery sized for a real groom and a detachable A5 blade mount, so you do not trade the blade library for the freedom. You do trade some top-end speed, so bulk removal is slower.

Sustained output8.0
Heat over 45+ minutes8.5
Blade range10.0
Wrist comfort9.0
Value7.0
Overall8.5 / 10

What it gets right

  • Cordless but still takes detachable A5 blades — a genuinely unusual combination
  • Runtime is built for a full groom rather than a tidy-up
  • 3,000 SPM is enough for body work on most coats

What it gets wrong

  • Slower than a corded two-speed at its top setting, so bulk removal takes longer
  • Battery is a consumable; eventually it is a cost
  • Premium price for the cordless convenience

Who should skip itSkip it if a cable genuinely does not bother you — a corded two-speed gives more motor for the money.

04

Best value for a lot of coat

Oster Golden A5 2-Speed

Cheapest route to real torque on a big dog, if noise is not a problem for yours.

A detachable-blade animal clipper resting on a work surface

Corded detachable-blade clipper

Speeds
Two-speed
Motor
Universal rotary, corded
Blade system
Detachable A5 (the system is named after it)
Reputation
Heavy-duty clipping of long, knot-prone coats

Covering a large area needs torque more than finesse, and the A5 delivers it for less money than anything else here. Blades are abundant and cheap, which matters because a big dog dulls blades faster. The honest costs are noise, vibration and running warmer than modern housings.

Sustained output9.0
Heat over 45+ minutes7.0
Blade range10.0
Wrist comfort6.5
Value9.5
Overall8.4 / 10

What it gets right

  • The original A5 clipper — blade availability is effectively unlimited and cheap second-hand
  • Torque where it matters: long coats prone to matted knots are what it was built for
  • Serviceable. Parts exist, and a worn unit can be repaired rather than binned

What it gets wrong

  • Loud and it vibrates more than a modern brushless clipper
  • Runs warmer than the newer vent-free housings, so blade temperature needs watching
  • Heavier than anything cordless

Who should skip itSkip it if your dog is noise-reactive — this is the loudest clipper in this set.

Best purchase that is not a clipper

Flying Pig electric lift grooming table

On a large dog, the table changes the job more than the clipper does.

A dog standing on a grooming table

Electric lift grooming table

Lift
Electric
Tabletop
42–50 in options
Capacity
220–400 lb depending on model
Entry
Low-entry height for dogs that cannot be lifted

Specs: PetGroomerHub — Best Grooming Tables Compared 2026

This is the recommendation large-dog owners resist and later agree with. An electric lift table with a low entry height means the dog walks on instead of being lifted, your back survives, and the dog stands at a height where you can actually see what the blade is doing. Lifting a 90 lb dog onto a fixed table is the most likely way either of you gets hurt during a home groom.

Sustained output10.0
Heat over 45+ minutes10.0
Blade range1.0
Wrist comfort10.0
Value5.5
Overall7.8 / 10

What it gets right

  • The low entry height is the real feature: a senior or arthritic dog walks on instead of being lifted
  • Removes the single biggest injury risk in home grooming, which is you lifting the dog
  • Height adjustment mid-groom saves your back on a long session

What it gets wrong

  • The most expensive item in this whole category by a wide margin
  • Needs a power outlet and a permanent floor footprint
  • A motor is one more thing that can fail

Who should skip itSkip it if you own a 15 lb dog you can lift one-handed — you are buying a solution to a problem you do not have.

FAQ

Questions people actually ask

How long does it take to clip a large dog at home?

Your first attempt on a 70 to 90 lb coated dog will take two to three hours including brushing, bathing and drying. Experienced, it settles at 60 to 90 minutes. Split it across two days if the dog loses patience — a half-done dog that is calm beats a finished dog that is frightened.

How do I get my big dog on the grooming table?

Do not lift it. Use a low-entry or electric lift table, or a ramp, or work on the floor. If you must lift, two people, one at the chest and one at the hips, and never by the front legs.

Do I need a more powerful clipper for a big dog?

More sustained, not more powerful. A corded two-speed is usually enough; what a big dog punishes is anything that fades or heats up. Blade rotation does more than a motor upgrade.

How often should I replace blades on a large dog?

Blades dull by use, not by time, and a large dog uses them faster. Expect to sharpen or replace a frequently used blade once or twice a year on a single big dog. A blade that pulls rather than cuts is dull, whatever it looks like.

How this page was put together

We define the coat problem the tool has to solve, shortlist products currently sold, compare the manufacturers’ documented specifications against what that coat actually needs, and cross-check against published findings from named sources. We do not test these tools on our own dogs under controlled conditions, and we will not say we do. Where a figure comes from a manufacturer, we name them; where it comes from someone else’s testing, we cite them. We print no prices — a stale number is worse than none. Read the full method.
